Kenyan Orphans Rural Development Programme (KORDP)

Lake Victoria region, Kenya

KORDP is an NGO established in Kenya in 1996. Its mission is to promote community orphan care and support initiatives while contributing to the reduction of HIV/AIDS prevalence within KORDP's partner communities in the country. The centre of KORDP's grassroots approach is to help rural villages establish and sustain early childhood development daycare centres (ECDs), which cater to children from the ages of three to six - many of whom have lost one or both of their parents to HIV/AIDS. These centres provide the children with nutritious meals and basic education; caregiver support, training and inputs to develop food security; and specific community training in the areas of nutrition, health and the importance of psychosocial support for orphans and vulnerable children.

KORDP-CSRAI Water Transportation Project

A critical need for KORDP was to have reliable water transportation to its 15 ECDs situated in remote areas along Lake Victoria and on some of its islands, that are only accessible by boat. These centres care for nearly 1,000 children, of which 75% are living with ailing parents, widowed parents or friends and relatives. CSRAI funded the completion of a boat and a supply of life jackets, to provide essential food and health care to these children as well as training to 894 caregivers. In addition, the nursing care in the most remote areas is now benefiting an addition 600 babies and small children.
