Marangu Area, Tanzania

UMWI is located in the beautiful green valley of Maraungu at the base of Kilimanjaro. Focused in its purpose, UMWI envisions a community free of HIV/AIDS. UMWI believes that it can only properly address HIV/AIDS by first being able to provide care, support and resources to a small manageable area. Once this is achieved it will then consider expanding its reach. A mix of retired Tanzanian nurses, professors, and journalists, UMWI staff believes that significant change and growth in the fight against HIV/AIDS has occurred over the years. UMWI relies on a team of dedicated home based care volunteers to provide support to the community. The success of programs such as its Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) clinic, peer education groups, OVC programs and People Living with HIV/AIDS programs have helped reduced the stigma of HIV/AIDS within its community said UMWI’s Executive Director, a retired Public Health Professor.

UMWI-CSRAI OVC Project

UMWI's Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Project will address the needs of 100 of the Marangu area's neediest children. CSRAI's funding will support home visits to this group of children; identification and documentation of OVC and their most immediate needs; OVC training workshops for OVC guardians, involving child rights, basic counseling, child participation, parenting skills and HIV/AIDS prevention; midday meals; quarterly psychosocial support meetings; and OVC participation in needs determination and participatory workshops. These activities are already contributing to increased support for and well-being of OVC in the Marangu Area.
